It’s hard to believe that in Fairfax County, the second richest county in the United States, many children go hungry on weekends! In Northern Virginia, 1 in 6 children is at risk of or experiencing hunger and 1 in 5 children in public school is eligible for free or reduced-price meals.
Some children look forward to coming to school, not primarily to study and learn, but to be able to eat a free breakfast and lunch! But what do these same children have available to eat on weekends? The Assistance League of Northern Virginia started a Weekend Food for Kids program in 2010 to help provide supplemental food for children over the weekend when school meals are not available.
Each eligible child receives a bag filled with nonperishable food items, which enables the children to come to school on Mondays ready to learn and thrive.
How can you help? SIGN UP in the Atrium to come to a food packing event and volunteer your time to help our Unity of Fairfax Team pack bags. This is a practical way to demonstrate our love and concern for these children!
WHEN and WHERE: We will be participating on Thursday, January 16, from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. at Dominion Energy, (Lincoln Park II Building) 3072 Centreville Road, Herndon, VA 20171.
