As a child, the neighborhood kids would often get together and play hide and seek after dark. This was my favorite time to play because hiding became simple. I would stand in the dark by the fence row in my back yard. Since my back yard sloped down and abutted a park, it was quite dark. I blended right into the shapes of the bushes, and from there, I could watch everything going on. From this vantage point, I would simply wait until the call sounded, “All outs in free!” I would then saunter into home base, much to the amazement of my friends who always exclaimed, “Where were you?”
This hiding place was really no hiding place at all. In the light, I would have been clearly visible, and so it is with our true selves. Our true selves are standing by, hidden in the open, observing everything going on while we search here and there for our “true” self. It is not that the true self is hiding from us. It is simply a temporary condition of darkness that keeps us from seeing what is always there.
Whatever you are focused on, that is where the light of your consciousness is shining. It is your home base. The light of your present awareness…of your current consciousness… may not be able to penetrate the darkness that hides all aspects of your self, but you can always put out the call, “All outs in free,” which was the signal those searching had surrendered. In hide and seek, all those outside home base could now come home without penalty of being “caught.”
From my standpoint, “all outs in free” is the act of forgiveness, and in this metaphor, specifically self-forgiveness. It means all aspects of your self are now free to be accepted without penalty of judgment and punishment. It means we forgive ourselves for missing the mark in days past, and we stop insisting on the way it should have been. We forgive ourselves for misperceptions, and we stop searching for perfection now. We forgive ourselves for being unaware, and we open ourselves to the joy of learning and discovery. We forgive ourselves for judgments that separate us into darkness, and we stand in the light of who we are now, ready to receive, accept, love and integrate ourselves into the home light.
